A Guide To Purchasing Or Adopting Ferrets

Embarking on the journey of adding ferrets to your family is an exciting adventure. From rescues to breeders, let's explore the avenues to ensure a smooth and reputable ferret acquisition.

1. Ferret Rescues: The First Option

Consider adopting from a ferret rescue organisation. Rescues ALWAYS have ferrets looking for loving homes. Not only does this give a deserving ferret a second chance, but it also contributes to the well-being of these wonderful creatures. Check local animal shelters like the RSPCA and ferret-specific rescues.

An adopted ferret is also a great way to start your ferret journey. Remember kits are hard work and a slightly older ferret that has been handled is a better option for first time owners.

2. Ferret Breeders: Choosing Wisely

If you opt for a breeder, research is key. Reputable breeders prioritise the health and well-being of their ferrets. Look for breeders with positive reviews and testimonials. Be sure to join our Facebook Group as you can check with admin if you are unsure if you are making the right choice.

3. Beware of Scammers: Protecting Your Investment

In the digital age, scams abound, and ferrets are no exception. Our rule is, never pay for a ferret you haven't seen in person^. Scammers often use appealing photos and false promises. Always visit the breeder or rescue, ask for references, and check their reputation online. If in doubt, consult with experienced ferret owners or local ferret groups for guidance.

Scammers often take advantage of your desperation to find a ferret by asking high prices - and ask for the funds to be deposited before the ferret can be delivered. A ferret should cost between AUD$50 - $150 in most cases. Purchasing from a rescue will be a higher cost but will include desexing, microchipping and parasite treatment.

^There are a few reputable rescues and breeders who may assist in getting the ferret to you - but that is rare. Please check if you are unsure before you agree to this.

4. The Reputable Breeder Checklist

Distinguish a reputable breeder by looking for these key traits:

- **Health Checks:** A good breeder ensures that their ferrets undergo regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.
- **Clean Environment:** The breeder's facility should be clean, with well-maintained cages and a healthy living environment for the ferrets.
- **Knowledgeable Guidance:** Reputable breeders willingly share their knowledge about ferret care, behaviour, and dietary needs. They offer guidance even after the purchase.

5. Meeting Your Ferrets: The Face-to-Face Experience

Seeing ferrets in person is crucial for first time owners. It allows you to assess their health, behaviour, and overall well-being. Be sure to contact a rescue and visit before you decide to own ferrets. Rescue volunteers / owners will be happy for you to see and handle ferrets first. Taking ferret home and then finding out they are not the pet for you is hard for you - and especially the ferrets.

6. Responsible Ownership Starts Here

Whether adopting or purchasing, responsible ownership begins with thorough research and a commitment to providing the best care for your ferret. Joining local ferret communities and seeking advice from experienced owners enriches your understanding and sets the stage for a lifelong bond.

In conclusion, the journey to finding your ferret is all about research and knowledge before you embark on the ferret journey!
